He was always the guest. In the homes of Peter and Zacchaeus, Martha and Mary, Joanna and Susanna, he was always the guest. At the meal tables of the wealthy where he pled the case of the poor, he was always the guest. Upsetting polite company, befriending isolated people, welcoming the stranger, he was always the guest. But here, at this table, he is the host. So come, you who hunger and thirst for a deeper faith, for a better life, for a fairer world. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invited us to be guests at his.

This Lent we are inviting you to be a guest at the table of Jesus Christ, a Table of Mercy, Table of Grace. Our devotions, each authored by a member of First Congregational's staff or mission community, will draw on the table-sharing stories of Jesus in Luke’s gospel, showing the mercy and grace of God extended to all those around him. Each one contains four parts:

  • A scripture reading to guide our thoughts,
  • A reflection to get us thinking more deeply,
  • A prayer to open our hearts and lives to new possibilities,
  • A suggested activity to get us moving further along the path of discipleship.

Throughout these devotions, you will also be blessed by the artwork of Sarah Boge. Through her series of six paintings, she depicts the emerging fullness of Christ’s table as God’s mercy and grace become more and more real for us.

We will also invite you to take part in our special Lenten Offering to extend the fellowship of Christ’s table to others. The offering will be split between two important mission efforts:

  • Clay bowl and towel for washing hands. Our UCC missionaries in Haiti, who are continuing the efforts to rebuild that country in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake by establishing schools and medical facilities.
  • Our new mission endeavor with Rebuilding Together of the Fox Valley, reaching out to the many needy families and individuals in our own community who are at risk of losing their homes due to needs for house repair and renovation.

We also encourage you to participate in One Great Hour of Sharing, celebrated on March 10, 2013 by making a contribution. OGHS reaches around the world and throughout this country providing the first hand of help to those who are facing the devastation of natural disaster or the outbreak of war.

Through these special offerings and these daily devotions, may we feel called to come to Christ’s table, a Table of Mercy, Table of Grace, and extend that invitation to others here in our communities and throughout the world!

Rev. Steve Savides, Senior Pastor
