Family Camp—2014 Intergenerational Musical

The Still Speaking Players of First Congregational UCC, Appleton presented their annual intergenerational church musical, Family Camp, on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 in the First Congregational Sanctuary. The musical was written by church members Steve and Diane Savides in collaboration with composer David Stoddard.

In Family Camp, an intergenerational cast of over 40 church members acted out the experiences of three extended families as they spend summer weeks together at a church camp for 25 years. Guided by the words of First Corinthians, the families go through trials, joys, challenges and changes together. Filled with song, dance, laughter and drama, Family Camp explores what it means to be a member of the family of God.

Ike Sturm Jazz Mass
Sunday worship services, April 14, 2013

First Congregational UCC, Appleton, WI

Ike Sturm was commissioned to write Jazz Mass by Saint Peter’s Church in Manhattan, and his jazz ensemble released a recording with choir and string orchestra in 2009. This work for voices, strings and jazz ensemble merges diverse musical languages into a powerfully unified aesthetic. Soaring melodies, dynamic rhythms and improvisations creatively portray the sacred text. The mass was performed by the Ike Sturm Jazz Ensemble and strings, along with the First Congregational Sanctuary Choir.

Men in Aprons Dinner 2013

Although the specific origins of this dinner are lost in the mists of time, some of those present at the beginning claim that the 2013 dinner marked the tenth anniversary.

This year, as in the past, a small but hardy (and hearty) group of men gathered in the church kitchen, donned aprons, and prepared a lasagna dinner for members and friends. The menu included “meaty” and meatless lasagna, oven-roasted asparagus, a garden salad, garlic bread, and lemon bars and brownies for dessert. The cooks thought it was their best effort ever!

If you didn't make it to the dinner this year, you can at least feast your eyes on the action photos in this gallery. Do make it a point to join us in 2014!

Apple Pie Baking 2012

Our Middle School and High School students enjoy spending a day each fall baking pies for our homebound members and others.  This year the apples were not plentiful enough to pick their own.  But you can see from these photos that they clean and chop the apples, assemble the pies and bake them.  One hundred pies were made and delivered this year!
